R.E.M. libera un tema inédito para apoyar a los afectados por el huracán Dorian

Tardó 19 años, pero finalmente R.E.M. publicó un tema que estuvo dos veces a punto de editarse en dos discos de la banda pero que, por distintos motivos, quedó siempre afuera de los álbumes. “Fascinating” es un tema grabado en 2001 y que ahora, el grupo que se separó en 2011, muestra con un fin solidario: ayudar a las miles de personas afectadas por el huracán Dorian en el Caribe.

“Me rompe el corazón ver el daño causado por el huracán Dorian. Ayúdenos y a [la ONG] Mercy Corps a hacer lo que podamos para aliviar el sufrimiento causado por esta catástrofe”., expresó, a través de un video publicado en Twitter, el cantante de R.E.M., Michael Stipe.

La historia de la canción que ahora el grupo saca a la luz comienza en plena producción del disco “Revaeal”. Sin embargo, no fui incluido en ese trabajo de estudio. En 2004, la canción volvió a ser grabada para el álbum “Around the Sun” (2004), en los estudios Compass Point de Nassau, capital de Bahamas, uno de los países que más sufrió el paso del huracán.

Pero tampoco entró el tema en ese disco, a pesar de ser una de las obras favoritas del cantante de R.E.M. “Sus formas de balada exuberante no concordaban con la tónica sobria y atmosférica del álbum”, explicó la banda en un comunicado de prensa. Ahora, según el vocalista, es el momento ideal para que pueda ser escuchada ya no por unos pocos.

Ahora, “Fascinating” puede escuchase de manera gratuita en Bandcamp y puede descargarse por un mínimo de dos dolares (sin que haya un máximo). Lo recaudado será destinado a la ayuda de las víctimas de Dorian en Bahamas. En el país caribeño, más de 50 personas murieorn por el huracán y más de 70.000 personas debieron abandonar sus casas por el fenómeno meteorológico.

About the Song: “Fascinating” first appeared on the original master of 2001’s Reveal before being cut last minute. It was Michael’s favorite song from the Reveal sessions according to Peter’s recollection, as chronicled in David Buckley’s R.E.M. biography, Fiction. “It’s really beautiful,” Mike told Buckley. “It has a flute, oboe arrangement, but it made the record too long… and something had to go.” The track was re-recorded in Nassau for 2004’s Around the Sun, but the lush ballad ultimately didn’t jibe with that album. Now this poignant outtake finally finds its fitting moment, as a means to aid the country where the band enjoyed over two months of creative retreat. “I have been fortunate to spend many weeks working and playing in the Bahamas, making friends and lots of music there,” reflects Mills. “It breaks my heart to see the damage wrought by Hurricane Dorian. Please help us and Mercy Corps do what we can to alleviate the suffering caused by this catastrophe.” Hurricane Dorian hammered the Bahamas’ northwest islands of Grand Bahama and Abaco for 48 hours in early September 2019, causing widespread destruction and leaving 76,000 people homeless and in need of lifesaving assistance.
